The party was rave and was in no mood to get over even at 2 in the night. Her head was a whirlwind of instincts and restraint. Deciding it was too dangerous to stay, she made to the exit.
Her flat being close by, she had walked to the party with Russel. But she was leaving alone as he was nowhere in sight. He was with her till mid night and then had disappeared the moment she got a little distracted. She was worried about him. But right now, she had enough on her hands to deal with. Russel could wait.
She began walking on the road leading to the flat. She had noticed the two guys who had got out of the party with her, and she could read their intentions right then. She was tired and thirsty and the last thing she wanted was a confrontation. So she continued to walk, thinking a confrontation with them would mean more trouble than now. Especially because something inside her was ready to get out of control at the slightest of instigations.
As luck would have it, the entire stretch to her house seemed to be deserted. A sinister part of her thanked the sweet coincidence, but she shunned that idea almost immediately. Or so she thought.
Gaining more confidence by the lone stretch, the guys quickened their pace and got closer to Layla. They looked in the trees on both sides of the road, and it was dark as far as the sight went. She was their prey for the night. And they were going for the kill. One of them walked faster than the other, wanting to take the lead and caught hold of Layla’s hand and jerked it to get her to face him.
Layla’s eyes were red and teary.
“Let me go without an event, or you’ll be very sorry”, she said, her voice shaking.
“We will let you go… eventually” said the guy holding her hand, and the other one joined the laugh.
This was it. With the guys so close to her, there was nothing else she could do.
The rest was a blur to Layla, as her pupils had dilated and become a crystal form of green. She had tried to protect them, but they had called it on themselves. Her jaw hurt only for a moment as it changed shape. The guy holding her hand jumped away with a start, as Layla changed to the form that had been struggling to get out of her all this while.
She was the predator and they were the prey. She walked towards them, growling under her breath. The guys were confused and stood where they were for a moment before receding in the woods. She walked on, out of control now. Her thirst had to be quenched today.
The guys were scared. “Who are you?” “What are you?” She had heard all that before. Nothing they needed to know.
She walked towards the one who had caught her hand and dug her claws in his shoulder. His shriek was deafening but there was none who registered it, save the other guy, who seemed to have frozen on the ground.
Layla titled her head, longing to bury her canines in his neck, savoring the smell of human flesh, her parched tongue watery at the thought of the taste of blood just under the thin layer of his pale skin. Her senses were going wild. It had been so long…
“Layla, stop! Please!”
It was Russel. He stood at a distance cautiously…
“Betty! Is Lizzy asleep?”
“Yes Mrs. Gartner, she’s sleeping in her room. Sorry, I didn’t hear you guys come in. I should get going”
“Thanks for babysitting Lizzy”, said Mrs. Gartner as she put some cash in my hand.
I shut the book and put it back in their library before leaving.
