Moments Gone and Past…

I took a silent walk amidst the chatter of strangers to go back to a time and place that was untouched by everything that surrounded me. I walked through the deserted alleyways while staring into the eyes of the stranger talking to me, nodding here and there, just enough to pretend I was listening.

This was the exact place where I had saved a beautiful memory of a dear friend once. But it’s all gone now. What’s left is a haunting swamp ready to drown me if I stay long enough. Have to get out, can’t come here again.

Torn

“He shot everyone in sight then set the village on fire. All exits are sealed, he can’t escape. We will get him.”

The officer turned away from the reporters in slow focused steps and went back to the cordoned area. He walked into the charred village and stopped to look at the tiny mushroom trampled over by someone escaping the horror of the night.

Only yesterday Hayley had pulled his sleeves and dragged him here.

“Daddy look!” she had said pointing at it with the excitement of a 4 year old.

He was transferred here recently. Hayley liked this place.

As the hero goes down…

He waited patiently for the pain to subside. It was four hours since he had lied there. The bleeding had stopped and the breath was scant.

He saw from afar the fires of celebration on the hills, heard the victory sounds of the trumpet. He should have been there, presiding over the felicitations, calling the feast. But he laid here comatose, staring stone eyed at the celebrations of his own victory.

Sometimes you win a storm and a little prick in your foot kills you, he thought as the light of the fire dimmed. Rafael this is not over yet.
