Just another One (Voice Week 5 of 5)

Voice Week is over.. After reading my entries over and over again, and visiting some of the super cool things other people have come up with, I think I could have done it so much better! Anyway.. Until next time.. Too bad that’s a year long wait! This is my last and final offering.. Hope you like it! =)

The press asks me what I felt at that moment when I realized he was dead. My answer is the same every time. I say I was thinking about my next assignment now that this was done. They look surprised, but it is true. No matter how celebrated, he was an anti-social element at the end of the day that had to be nipped. There are more like him who need to be attended to. And as long as I am in the police force, I will chase criminals and bring them to task. I’m just doing my job.

…………….

This is my fifth and last entry for Voice Week 2012.

Voice week is a writing challenge hosted by BeKindReWrite to experiment with different voices. It’s the same story told from different points of view.

All my attempts are based on constant premise and characters, with only the perspective of the protagonist variable. Based on the temperament of the protagonist, the tone of narration as well as his feelings towards his adversary change.

There will be 5 installments coming, one each day, from Oct 1st till Oct 5th.

I am loving this! 🙂

The Mastermind (Voice Week 4 of 5)

It’s been 5 years since he is dead. The 15 years that I spent chasing him, were the most illustrious years of my life. Such was my obsession with that man that I didn’t even look up when my wife slammed the front door and exited my life forever… Not that I fancied him or anything… but while women, however hot, can be found in abundance, a mastermind like that is rare to come by.

At the risk of confirming anyone’s doubts about my sanity and… other things, I have to say, I miss him. I hope to see him in hell.

A Hero? (Voice Week 3 of 5)

Was he a hero, and we – the ones chasing him, the villains?

I would never dare to spell this aloud, but I used to admire him for what he was – a man who loved as he lived, naïve enough to fend for people who could sell themselves for a bottle of whisky and a bundle of currency.

I can’t do anything against his traitors, they are under our protection. Perhaps I don’t have to. If they could not show allegiance to the one man who put his life at stake for them, it’s only a matter of time before they dig each others’ graves.

The Hated (Voice Week 2 of 5)

He was the greatest challenge of my life. And every time he escaped, a bit of my confidence ebbed out. I had nightmares. I used to be scared he would die due to some other reason. I had to be the one killing him – not a disease, not a wild animal, not a stray bullet. Or I could not have reclaimed my life.

When I killed him, I felt alive again… assured of my existence.

I repent one thing though. The grace that my position demanded, kept me from kicking his body to my heart’s content.

I do that in my dreams.

The Rascal (Voice Week 1 of 5)

I chased him for 15 years, through mountains and valleys, through rain and shine. Now that he is dead, I should feel victorious. It was my bullet after all. But I saw something in his eyes as he was falling… his lips had curled into a smile just before the bullet hit him. As if he was telling me that I could not have caught him against his will.

At that instant, the rascal robbed me of my moment. And I wonder to this day, 5 years past, what he could have been thinking. I wish he came back from the dead to tell me.
